In recent years, we see more and more people being more conscious about what they drink. They are more often choosing the healthier options and increasingly abandoning the traditional sugar bombs. One of the biggest ensuing trends is the rise of sugar-free beverages. Whether it's sodas, energy drinks or alcohol-free options, almost everyone is looking for something that tastes good AND is good for you.

But why is there really such a high demand for sugar-free options? So is it really so bad to crave sugar more than once a day?

If we are completely honest: sugar is a wonderful ingredient. It's like a long-term relationship-after all, it's involved in everything and we've been used to it for so long that it's almost hard to imagine what life would be like without it. In total, the average Dutch person eats about 110 grams of sugar per day. This is equivalent to 28 sugar cubes per day! (Hartstichting, z.d) Not only is sugar commonly found in food, but it is also found in almost everything we drink.

Sugars are one of the biggest culprits when it comes to unhealthy eating. While it can cause you to get a quick energy boost, excessive sugar can cause disease. The downside of high sugar intake is becoming increasingly apparent. It is more often associated with serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. As a result, awareness is growing and more and more people are seriously thinking about how they really need to start ending this long-standing relationship with sugar after all, or at least getting in touch with it less often.

Whereas a few years ago we were fairly limited in sugar-free options, today you can find it everywhere. Think not only of the zero- or light versions, but many new brands on the market that focus specifically on healthier drinks. Here, not only are sugars avoided, but the focus is also on offering responsible and sustainable products.
